Automatic, minimum weight optimum design capability for rectangular, simply supported waffle plates subjected to multiplicity of inplane load conditions is presented; synthesis involves 6 design parameters which are given; mathematical programming problem to which synthesis leads has following characteristics -- relative minima, nonlinear inequality constraints, multitude of side constraints, and nonlinear merit function; numerical results for symmetric and unsymmetrical waffle-plate optimum designs are presented; applicability to space vehicle design.
