New concept for berthing large tankers in exposed offshore locations is embodied in Esso bow mooring on north coast of Libya; installation permits loading tankers up to 97,000 dw tons in winds of 50 knots and waves of over 17 ft; pylon was barged to site, then unloaded by flotation and "walked" out 6000 ft to 100 ft depth of water and fixed to sea floor; ships are moored to rotating boom which is attached to its top; partly buoyant submerged loading arm is suspended from mooring boom by ball point and swung alongside ship to carry oil, fed through 42-in. submerged pipe line from shore for loading tanker.
