New facilities at port of Guayaquil, Ecuador, include barge canal, affording direct access from Guayas River to port, which was mandatory because of heavy barge and coaster traffic; canal is located within course of Estero Cobina for most of its length, converging with ship channel at port; 3035 lineal feet of marginal wharf provide five 607-ft long berths with harbor depth of 35 ft at mean lower low water; 4 of berths have transit sheds with total storage area of 288,000 sq ft; paved open storage space is provided at fifth berth which is equipped with 75-ton stiff-leg derrick for handling heavy cargo or equipment.
