Booster used for Project Mercury orbital missions is modified Series-D Atlas; modifications required to qualify Atlas-D for manned-flight applications include modifications of Range Safety System, Autopilot, Hold Down and Release System, and addition of Abort Sensing and Implementation System (ASIS); latter was designed to include capability within missile for detecting catastrophic failures and ensuring rapid firing of Mercury capsule escape rockets; procedures followed to "man-rate" Atlas prior to first manned orbital mission are outlined.
