Previous theory describing free fiber length in paper was found to be in error; new theory, which overcomes difficulties of original, was developed and verified by Monte Carlo experiment and by actual measurements on surface layer fibers of multiplanar sheet; free fiber length is random in size, having negative exponential size distribution; relationships among fiber width, fractional mean total free fiber length per fiber and relative bonded area were studied; definitions of free fiber length other than distance along central fiber axis between points of optical contact are reviewed.
