Despite interest in hydraulic and hydrostatic transmission, toothed gears are likely to continue in use in road vehicles for some time; on railways, steam engine is being replaced by internal combustion engines and electric motors, resulting in greater use of toothed gearing to actuate locomotive driving wheels; main propulsion gears for ships have also received attention; in field in general there has been progress; aspects examined include design, bending strength of spur gear teeth, helical gears, resistance to surface stress, Novikov gears, heat treatment, finishing, lubricants, etc.
