Reading of coded railroad car numbers by photocell device, combined with electronic data storage and processing techniques, provided basis for centralized freight vehicle movement control system, and equipment for 2 trial installations on British Railways; number of each car in train is read by device at trackside, transmitted to lineside hut, and stored there until whole train has passed; car numbers may then be read out in sequence over railway and Post Office lines to central computer which would coordinate this information with other data obtained by conventional means from terminals and district offices.
