Sequence of events in starting rocket engine must be carefully controlled to avoid mishaps; starting of large engines is further complicated by need to avoid excessive dynamic loads which would be caused by high rates of increase of thrust; factors controlling thrust transients are described and several methods of ensuring acceptable rate of thrust increase from Blue Streak propulsion system; engine is Rolls-Royce RZ.2 which produces 137,000 lb thrust at sea level from combustion of kerosene and liquid oxygen (LOX).
