Requirements for low-cost booster for accomplishing high-altitude, sub-orbital testing of machines and man-carrying vehicles and NASA program for developing unguided boost vehicle called Little Joe; 7 vehicles launched at Wallops Island which helped develop abort system of Mercury capsule; development of Little Joe II for Apollo program; booster has diameter of 13 ft, can carry payloads up to 80, 000 lb and incorporates provisions for variety of solid-propellant motors with maximum thrust capability of 800,000 lb; design of launcher, hydrogen peroxide system, and autopilot.
