Approximate analytical method to predict boil-off losses due to external heating of uninsulated missile tanks containing liquid hydrogen; analysis was applied to upper-stage tank-age of 2 missiles differing only in type of propulsion namely, solid propellant first stage with 90 sec of action time, and liquid propellant first stage which burned for 140 sec; it was predicted that during first-stage flight 15-16% of liquid hydrogen fuel would be lost due to boil-off; losses could be avoided with thin layer of light insulation such as corkboard; it was concluded that uninsulated missile tanks were not desirable.
