Relationship between units built and unit costs is discussed, and theory presented for estimating cost savings of multiple ship production; it is suggested that reliable predictions of cost savings can be made by using learning curve technique to estimate cumulative average ship costs for any number of vessels; further, that individual yards, through analysis of cost records and incorporation of accounting procedures that adequately evaluate component cost behavior, could determine accurate curves for different types of vessels, and in so doing provide valuable tool for easing task of analyzing multiple cost savings.
