United States Salvage Assn, Inc has collated all damages alleged to have resulted from perils insured against, as reported by 100 dry cargo vessels during 1-yr period; vessels were all American flag registry, and all single screw, steam turbine driven, in 7000-14,000 dw range; more than two-thirds of damages were caused by collision or heavy weather; 2 largest, almost equal, single items, hull damage due to striking piers and docks, make up about 40% of total repair costs; other costly categories were grounding and crew negligence; possible modifications in vessel design and equipment to reduce frequency and extent of damage are noted; table shows summary for 312 damages.
