Study of feasibility of merchant ship automation shows that centralized ship control system for navigation, communication, collision avoidance, trim, list, and stability control, damage detection, power plant and associated auxiliaries offer best road to significant savings; use of central data processing computer for mathematical computations, sequencing operations, monitoring, and data logging; how computer characteristics were determined and role of remote control; engine room data readout and control; prototype Marine Course Computer, built by United Aircraft Corp, and currently under evaluation at sea, is described.
