Paper assesses practicability of applying labor saving techniques to vessels in West Coast-Hawaiian trade and evaluates degree to which such applications appear economically tenable; crew tasks and equipment are analyzed and degrees of automation explored to ascertain manning scales and capital investments necessary; to illustrate concept, following vessels are described -- modification of existing C-3 container ship with steam propulsion machinery and new container ship; data are based on studies by Mason Navigation Co of crew functions and their relationship with present and future equipment.
