Ground rules used in judging internal atmosphere of manned orbital space station are outlined with respect to shirt-sleeve environment, fire hazards, station weight, and spacesuit operation; most important ingredient in cabin atmosphere is oxygen; 100% oxygen atmosphere and atmosphere consisting of oxygen plus inert diluent gas, is considered; diluent gas considerations and advantages of helium; atmosphere-related physiological hazards, flash blindness, burning, overpressure, and changes in atmosphere.
