To obtain low impact velocity for recoverable space vehicles at touchdown optimum weight approach is combination of parachutes and rockets; retro-rockets are desirable and vehicles acceleration and surface contact pressures are to be kept to minimum; effects of retrorockets to consider are ground effect and effect of cavity in water formed by jet action; method is developed for performing calculations concerning water impact; method allows for cavity in water surface, but is not limited to this condition.
