Factors affecting velocity of sound in seawater are temperature, salinity and pressure; 2 reasons for wanting deeper diving submarines are increase in volume of water available for operation, and sonar capability and sound protection; method of achieving deep diving submarines is developed which considers compressive tangential hoop stresses, compressive axial stress, plate bending stress, and normal stress of pressure load on plate; formulas developed give depth limits for various materials which are in close agreement with results of other investigators; proposed hull configuration and its advantages.
