Previously undesirable boiler flue gas, because of its unburnable chemical composition, can be utilized to prevent fire within cargo tanks of oil tankers; efforts to improve quality of inert gas, problems which can be expected with inert gas system, corrosive effect of various inert gases on cargo tank materials, and economics of inert gas installation are considered; economic comparison indicates differences between vessel having neither internal tank coatings nor inert gas system, with 100% coatings and no inert gas system, and tanker with inert gas system only.
