Traffic congestion in and around Tokyo has become intensified year after year, and subway has come to be looked upon as most effective way of eliminating or alleviating it; Teito Rapid Transit Authority (TRTA) in Japan has had automatic train control (ATC) system in operation for many years; due to ever increasing population and transport demand, Authority pioneered in developing automatic train operation (ATO) system and has been testing it on Hibiya Line since 1962; under ATO, all train functions, notch-in, power running, coasting, braking, and stopping, are performed automatically; motorman simply presses pushbutton to start train, which then runs under ATC and stops smoothly and automatically at next station; Authority is convinced that by putting this new system into operation ATO can carry on passenger service at shorter headway, with greater safety and accuracy, and can expand traffic capacity; further study is now under way to improve system by combining centralized traffic control system and inductive radio system, in order to exercise group control over all trains on track.
