Crash barrier developed uses tensioned horizontal members carried on relatively weak vertical supports; report describes series of tests carried out on wire rope barriers of this type to select most suitable detailed design; 28 dynamic tests were carried out on alternative designs of barrier in which ropes rested in vertical slots cut into tops of weak I-section mild steel posts; most of tests were carried out with cars weighing 3000 lb, but in some tests concerned with optimum rope heights small vehicles and tall vehicles were used; impact speeds ranged from 17 to 67 mi/hr at nominal angles to line of barrier of 10 and 20°.
