Review is limited to large engine systems -- principally to those used to power booster and upper stages of launch vehicles; status of today's liquid-propellant rocket engines; basic United States space mission goals, rocket engine requirements and new rocket engine concepts and technology are described; emphasis is on selected, thrust engine systems typical of spectrum of future high-designs -- aerodynamic spike nozzle engine having high performance, short length, and altitude compensation, and dual-combustor-cycle, bell nozzle engine, high-area-ratio/high-performance design that utilizes new concept for cooling.
