In design of multistage vehicles using slender, fast-burning rockets flexural behavior of structure is critical aspect; paper shows how behavior is modified by roll rate, highlighting aerodynamic loading aspects and dangers of resonance occurring between roll, pitch, and flexural frequencies; for vehicle having same properties of pitch as in yaw, conclusions are that divergence boundary found for zero roll rate usually applies at all practical roll rates, and that vehicle operating close to this boundary has maximum chance of survival at roll frequency lying between pitching and fundamental bending frequencies.
