Hydro- or aquaplaning is defined as condition occurring in certain circumstances of pneumatic tire operation on wet roads, when load carried by tire becomes entirely supported upon water layer retained within region of ground contact; ground contact area of tire moving on wet surface comprises following zones -- Zone A, -unbroken water film, Zone B -transition zone, Zone C - dry contact; effective length of Zones A and B increases with vehicle velocity reducing size of Zone C until, at hydroplaning velocity, entire contact area is fully water borne; physical phenomena responsible for progressive penetration of water layer into contact zone are hydrodynamic pressure due to impact of tire on water layer and squeeze film; influence of tire design on hydroplaning such as tread pattern design, tread material, construction and shape of casing.
