Objectives of planning for NASA/JPL Deep Space Network (DSN) and outline of decisions and work to date including some potential steps of importance for future; DSN performance for Mariner-Mars 1969 is shown; system uses block coding and ground reception only at elevation angles greater than 20°; systems for hypothetical Mariner-Mars 1975 mission are also described together with Voyager 1973 baseline design which includes among its operational modes planetary radar; results of cost studies relating to equipment, operational, and station costs.
