Available methods for sensing orientation of satellite with respect to local orbit coordinates are reviewed and importance of gyrocompassing as heading reference is shown; principles of gyrocompassing are developed by succession of simple mechanizations; effect of horizon sensor noise and suitability of generated attitude are examined for each system; some of simple mechanizations lead to high gas expenditure and high vehicle angular rates when combined with nonlinear controllers; decoupling loops that overcome problem are shown to be advantageous for instrumentation purposes as well, because they make gyro gimbal angles directly represent vehicle attitude without contamination or approximation; flight data are presented.
