Glider flight is especially practiced at certain engineering schools whose students manage to design and build high-grade gliders; leader among these schools is Technological Inst. in Darmstadt; work there is supported by number of donations as well as by direct aid from state; at glider contest in Rhoen not only were interesting "apprentice" designs displayed, but two most noteworthy world's records established; one was that of glider flight of 34.4 miles made by Kegel who rose into air during hail and thunderstorm and, flying in midst of clouds which barred all visibility, covered distance named at average speed of 47 m. p. h.; other record was that of Nehring who flew to place 3.6 miles away and returned to starting place again. See brief translated abstract in Automotive Abstracts, vol. 5, no. 6, June 20, 1927, p. 168.
