For purposes of paper it is assumed that Stansted, Essex, will be chosen third airport although final decision has not been made; air traffic directed into and out of three airports in same geographical area represents serious problems from point of view of safety; two philosophies have been evolved -- first proposes to operate unilateral route system from each airport; that is, Heathrow would handle westerly, north-westerly and south-westerly traffic; Stansted north-easterly and easterly traffic; and Gatwick southerly and south-easterly traffic; other proposal is that all three airports should operate multi-radial services; systems are critically assessed.
