Aerodynamic design and development of wing and high-lift system for DC-9 family of short-to-medium-range jet transports are reviewed, starting with overall design goals of short takeoff and landing field lengths, maximum practical cruise speed, and low direct operating costs; aerodynamic design of wing and high-lift system is discussed in detail with primary emphasis placed on DC-9 Series 20, 30, and 40; wing incorporates full-span leading edge slats for extremely high maximum lift capability and specially designed airfoils for low cruise drag.
