Background of work on variable-sweep aircraft and review of work done at Warton research and development center of British Aircraft Corp, Preston Div; to achieve full benefit from variable geometry, following range of processes are presented as part of normal design procedure -- geometry, discontinuities, and stiffness; survey of potential problems posed by introduction of variable sweep shows that none of them are likely to strain processes in existing methods of development for high-speed aircraft. Abridged adaptation of paper presented to Structure Sub-Committee of Aeronautical Research Council in June 1966, recently released for publication.
