Thermal protection from effects of ice built up can be achieved by means of anti-icing or de-icing; two distinct types of anti-icing are total evaporative system and wet `run back' system; de-icing system allows ice to form on protected surface for short periods, after which ice is removed by application of heat to selected areas, in rotation; examples of de-icing systems are engine air intakes, leading edges of aerofoil surfaces, helicopter rotor blades and propeller blades; heating requirements and design calculations.
