Examination of advantages of fail safe design and present nondestructive testing techniques, and importance of facilitating inspection at design stage; all available nondestructive testing methods for aircraft structures in service, including visual, magnetic crack detection, X-ray, eddy current detectors and ultrasonics are reviewed and limitations and effectiveness of each method discussed, illustrated by various examples from aircraft in service.
