Coating for supersonic transports and missiles was required that would resist rain and protect steel, aluminum alloy, or glass reinforced substrate at 300 C for 90 sec at raindrop incidence of 45 degrees; it had to adhere well to isotropic or anisotropic substrate under wet, dry, and violent thermal shock conditions, be radar transparent, and easy to apply; aluminum oxide filled epoxy resin was found to be most suitable; tests were carried out with high speed (2500 fps) rain gun and on rocket sled at Holloman Air Force Base, New Mexico.
