During sea trials relating to study of stresses in bilge keels, measurements in deck amidships indicated ship was frequently vibrated by wave excitation; there was no evidence of slamming and only two-node mode of vertical hull vibration seemed significant; amplitude was affected by ship speed, draft, trim, ship heading with respect to direction of waves and sea state; special trials were carried out; later, to improve propulsive performance ship was fitted with ram bow having bulb area ratio of 9%; differences in sea states precluded detailed comparison of bow forms; however, in both trials increase in vibration with ship speed followed very similar pattern.
