Ten-year period since advent of Sputnik I is divided into initial period of 3 yr ending with 1960, during which most of main directions of space program were defined; and, into ensuing growth period of about 6 yr whose end is marked by report of President's Science Advisory Committee (PSAC), Space Program in Post-Apollo Period, issued in 1967; four factors which give importance, urgency, and inevitability to advancement of space technology are discussed and various phases of space program goals described; progress made in applications of space technology to communications and meteorology and review of major events.
