Extreme attitude-control precision required by Manned Orbiting Telescope (0.01 arc-sec) may only be attainable with system using control moment gyros (CMG's); paper deals with problem of achieving torque amplification with light weight two-degree-of-freedom (DOF) CM G's; this can only be accomplished by mechanically (not servo-) synchronizing gimbals of similar CMG units; result is heavier system than one in which two independent 2-DOF CMG's are driven to provide three-axis control; new "coning"-type gimbal suspension is described which simplifies gimbal synchronization and eliminates unwanted control torque cross-coupling inherent in conventional 2-DOF CMG gimbal suspension.
