Mission trajectory design for NASA manned space-flight programs has been tailored with flight safety as primary consideration; impact on mission design of various constraints is shown by examples that have affected Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo programs; constraints require considerable mission analysis to define flight-control limits, mission rules, and operational procedures that are used in real time by flight crew and flight-control team to further enhance flight safety; through application of proper mission design, constraint definition, trajectory-control limits, and operational procedures, flight safety has been achieved.
