Results of study comparing all-ablative and combined ablative/radiative heat shield weights and costs are presented for SV-5 (lift/drag ratio, L/D equals 1.4) and SV-32 (L/D equals 2.7) vehicles; radiative concept is composed of modular brazed honeycomb heat shields with optimized low-density insulation and closed-loop active cooling system; effects of different entry conditions on heat shield weights are evaluated to define where minimum weight conditions occur and to determine their implications on vehicle operational capability; manufacturing costs for unit areas, total vehicles, and reflight turnaround are presented.
