Application of air-breathing turbo-fan engines to variable geometry, lifting, entry spacecraft provides cruise-spacecraft having increased operational flexibility; craft can accomplish high performance, 3000 nautical mi lateral range mission, by combining glide available from its medium hypersonic Lift/Drag (L/D) (1.7 to 2.3) with subsonic cruise in atmosphere; various advantages are pointed out in conjunction with model missions, performance and landing performance; features of cruise-spacecraft which is medium L/D, slim, lifting body using ablative lower surface and radiative upper surface for protection during entry.
