Feasibility of using various lift engines to land manned entry vehicle is examined; survey of engines provided basis for estimating engine performance and size for 1970 to 1975 time period; range of expected environments appears to present no major problems and avoidance of hazardous emergencies seems possible; evaluation of landing performance with propulsive lift is presented together with analysis of low-level behavior through real-time simulator studies; use of propulsive lift provides landing flexibility approximating that of VTOL aircraft including limited decision reversal time, low-altitude ranging capability of several miles, and near-zero touchdown velocity.
