In-flight and laboratory conditions that may be expected in magnetogasdynamic re-entry studies are compared; phenomenological aspects of problem are considered from fluidmechanical and thermodynamic viewpoints; laboratory apparatus are described and experimental observations of increases in bow shock standoff distance and drag are discussed; it is shown that such increases are appreciable even with moderately strong magnetic fields; experimental data agree fairly well with theory.
