Determination of payload feasibility of collection of Martian surface sample and its return to Earth; analysis is directed at mission applications in mid-1970's; earth launches are restricted to single Saturn V or smaller vehicle and it is assumed that all maneuvers after launch are accomplished with chemical propulsion stages; in terms of required payload weight, several mission modes exist, by which 1 - to 2-lb surface sample of Mars can be obtained; total mission feasibility will depend on additional demonstration of technological feasibility of ability to soft-land 10,000 lb on Mars, or to rendezvous and dock two unmanned spacecraft in Mars orbit.
