It is noted that steels now employed have made it possible for transportation industry to reach one of its most important goals, i.e. design vehicles that can carry payload equal to three times their weight; benefits gained from increased fatigue life of higher-strength steels (SAE 950, ASTM A242, A441, A514, A572) used for frames, truck cabs, motor mounts, flexplates in transmissions, etc; mechanical properties of high-strength steels for transit cement mixers and railroad cars, ships and containers; high-strength fasteners for automotive applications; extensive work carried out on weldable low-alloy steel with up to 0.30% C for armor plate is mentioned.
