To make subways more competitive with auto in downtown travel in largest cities of United States and Canada, stations are being made more attractive and safer; among innovations are high-ceilings, with mezzanine included in these high rooms, open pass-gates rather than turnstiles or escalators, careful attention to making entire station visible to attendant in ticket booth, brighter lighting to dispel subway gloom, and stations and passageways more open to outside; to direct design of these improvements, architects are now being given more authority and responsibility in subway projects; Montreal's experience with Metro shows popularity of good new subway systems.
