Most of big mining and smelting operations in this country are based on sulfide ores, with pyrites (FeS2) or pyrrhotite (Fe7S8) associated with desired chalcopyrite (CuFeS2), galena (PbS), sphalerite (ZnS), pentlandite (NiFeS), etc; in 1965 about 513,000 tons of sulfur were recovered in smelter or roaster gases (including calcining units at Valleyfield and Port Maitland); pressure from antipollution agencies across continent could lead to sulfur recovery installations in places where economics alone would never justify investment; gypsum is almost inexhaustible source of sulfur if only economics were right; on this continent, however, availability of Frasch or byproduct sulfur excluded gypsum processes from serious consideration.
