Comparisons were made of numbers of pedestrians crossing road and numbers of pedestrian casualties on different lengths of approximately 8 mi of road in four towns, each with population of about 70,000; number of factors which affect comparison were taken into account including presence or approximity of pedestrian crossings and their type, age and sex of pedestrians, level of vehicle flow and effect of one-way streets.
