Influence of density (measured in vehicle trip ends) on highway transportation cost; in theoretical study of city with uniform density and uniform gridiron highway network, equation is developed expressing relationship between density and total transportation cost, consisting of investment, operating, accident, and travel-time costs; optimal density is calculated at which total cost per trip is minimized; how to optimize density and highway spacing simultaneously by assuming particular values for variables and calculating optima is shown.
