Initial planning for Northeast Corridor High-Speed Ground Transportation System and role of educational institution in assisting in formulation of basic policy decision are described; several options were available to Northeast Corridor Project of Federal Government, ranging from least change which consisted of improving present rail system in Northeast Corridor to provide better and more frequent service to most radical change, developing wholly new system to operate at significantly higher speeds; interdisciplinary group from Massachusetts Institute of Technology proposed to U S Dept of Commerce that Federal Government embark on research and development program that would permit selection and engineering of new high-speed ground transportation system; this recommendation was adopted and subsequently implemented; description is presented of initial results of research program under way at M.I.T. under sponsorship of U S Dept of Transportation including work on scheduling, control, suspension systems, propulsion, vehicle and tube aerodynamics, and some infrastructure or guideway problems.
