Vehicles that are either totally or partly supported by air cushions are divided into following groups -- high speed amphibious craft, totally enclosed by flexible skirts and propelled by air screws; marine craft used entirely over water without amphibious capability; heavily loaded small to medium sized and over-land hovercraft operating at speeds along low cost easily maintained tracks; self-contained air cushion supported vehicles for off road and crude track operations; low speed sliding devices for operation over smooth surfaces including hoverpallets, `built-in' air bearings and conveyor systems, and small personal hovercraft; examples of each group are described indicating advantages and disadvantages, and technical problems that need to be faced.
