Reference is made to previous experiment, indexed in Engineering Index 1963 p 2349; present study is extended toward lower static pressures and higher Mach number; results indicated that in region of lower pressures, where large amounts of supercooling are regularly obtained, air behaves essentially as pure nitrogen, indicating that it is spontaneous condensation of nitrogen which triggers onset phenomenon at low pressures; theoretical analysis supports findings; new method for determining conservative value of minimum stagnation temperature insures condensation-free flow when operating hypersonic wind tunnel with either air or nitrogen.
