Attempt to develop better understanding of stop sign intersections; study revealed that side-street driver makes his decision to cross or merge with main-street traffic on basis of potential time advantage; main-street speeds indicated two distinct types of sidestreet driver maneuvers -- crossing and merging; analysis of crossing and merging maneuvers; very high main-street volumes substantially reduced time advantage required by typical side-street driver, whereas sudden restrictions in visibility significantly increased required time advantage.
